Acupuncture is more effective for back pain than standard NHS treatment, reported three newspapers (15 September 2006). The newspapers were largely accurate in their reports of a well-conducted trial. The study found only a small benefit of acupuncture, and further research is needed.

People nearing the end of life will be able to do so in more comfortable and modern buildings thanks to a £50 million funding boost to pay for better facilities in hospices. The Government is allocating the money to adult hospices to pay for a wide range of renovation and enhancement works. These could include refurbishing day rooms and bedrooms, improving hospice grounds and modernising facilities.

The newspapers accurately reported the main findings of a cohort study from the USA. Further research is needed to determine whether the association represents a real protective effect.
